Navigon 8100T Review:
The Navigon 8100T is a dashboard-mounted GPS unit with a flat, sexy, 4.8-inch touchscreen. It’s easy to affix it to your dash via a suction cup. We especially liked the Reality View Pro feature, which gave us a realistic image of all of the streets we never knew existed in our area, complete with their actual road signs. The Navigon 8100T combines the standard 3D and 2D navigation with NASA-provided geographic guidance complete with rolling hills and elevations. The rest of the innards are standard fare with Bluetooth hands-free calling, voice entry, Zagat restaurant ratings, and the ultra road trip buddy, with the Exit Guide that lets you search upcoming exits for restaurants, gas, and so on. The Navigon 8100T has a very impressive Panorama View 3D. The 3-D view might just be enough to distract you from the 8100T’s many minor annoyances. For instance, if you plan on turning the unit off between trips, you’d better know where you are going — at least for some of the ride. Every time we restarted, it took a good 3 to 10 miles for the GPS to sync up with its respective satellites. The system is created out of NASA terrain data with digital elevations. The GPS device has a 4.8-inch touchscreen, a built-in graphics accelerator, r/t traffic, voice address entry, Bluetooth and text-to-speech. The high end Navigon 8100T also features Zagat ratings and reviews for some locations and has a MSRP of $599.00.
Measuring 5.3×3.3×0.9 inches and tipping the scales at 9.4 oz, the Navigon 8100T is equipped with a 533-MHz processor from Samsung; a SiRF StarIII GPS chip; 512MB of ROM; 128MB of RAM; and a SD card preloaded with software and maps. Additionally, the product integrates a special traffic receiver and antenna; dual microphone input for noise cancellation; and a nonremovable 1500 mAh lithium ion battery. The 8100T’s touchscreen is capable of displaying local street and speed-limit signs for virtually every highway interchange and exit that drivers can expect to encounter. The device’s built-in voice destination entry technology makes it possible for drivers to operate the unit while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. Speak the desired address and the device will guide you through all the navigational twists and turns required to get to the destination. The Navigon 8100T also can function as a Bluetooth speakerphone, allowing drivers to conduct cell-phone conversations in a hands-free mode. Additionally, users have the ability to port contacts to the 8100T that have been stored on compatible handsets equipped with the Bluetooth HFP 2.0 profile.
