Magellan RoadMate 1430

Magellan RoadMate 1430 Review:
The Magellan RoadMate 1430 has a built-in traffic receiver. LIVE traffic reports appear on the interactive touch screen with delay advisories for incidents along your route. Your GPS calculates ETA by intelligently factoring traffic flow and prompts you to re-route whenever a quicker way is available. A 3-month FREE subscription is included! (Fees apply after introductory period.)

An expanded Points of Interest database offers 6 million built-in destinations; an incredible value. Find fuel, food, lodging, ATMs and hundreds of other businesses and services with a few touches of the screen. Plus, built in maps of the entire U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada!

Use the intuitive menu options to pick your destination and choose how you navigate to virtually anywhere. If you want to stay on the freeway, avoid freeways, travel the shortest distance or arrive in the quickest time, your Magellan RoadMate enables you to navigate the way you want. You can even exclude specific roads or freeways from your route and also avoid toll roads.

The advanced QuickSpell™ feature intelligently searches addresses and Points of Interest, offering you a simple list of available locations. It even checks spelling so you can enter a destination with just a few touches of the screen.

SmartDetour™ prompts you to route around sudden slow or stopped freeway traffic and automatically re-calculates the fastest detour.

The integrated rechargeable battery offers navigation for up to three hours. Search destinations, plan trips and enter addresses and personal Points of Interest from a meeting place, restaurant or anywhere power is unavailable.

The Magellan RoadMate 1430 is very similar in design to the RoadMate 2000. The Magellan RoadMate 1430 does not have any buttons on the front, which leaves a lot more room for the screen. The Magellan 1430 has a larger 4.3″ WQVGA - wide-format color touch screen. The dimensions of the Magellan 1430 are 4.57″ x 3.27″ x 0.73″ and it weighs 7.1 oz. The top of the Magellan RoadMate 1430 is where you will find the only button on the whole device. This button is used for turning the RoadMate on and off. However, you will not need to use it very much because it turns on automatically when it gets power and off when power is lost. The right side has the only connectors, they are a mini USB plug for power, and software updates, and a 3.5mm FM plug for the LIVE traffic antenna. The bottom of the RoadMate 1430 initially looks very basic, but I read on their website that the Magellan RoadMate 1430 comes with an SD card. The bottom has a small sticker that covers the SD card slot. By the looks of it the card that comes with the RoadMate has a capacity of 2GB.

You can search POIs by name or by category. The Magellan RoadMate 1430 POI database is divided into 32 categories, with the most commonly used categories such as Gas Stations, Coffee, and Restaurants appearing at the top of the list. Some categories (restaurants, for example) have subcategories to help you further refine your search. Whether you search by category or name, you have the option of searching near your current location, around a city, or close to an address.

Your calculated route is highlighted in bright green on the map screen. At the bottom of the display, one data field shows you the distance to your next turn. You can toggle between distance to your destination, estimated time of arrival, and remaining trip time. A tap of the direction turn arrow at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen brings up the turn-by-turn list for your route. The only obstacles filter that can be applied to your routes is for toll roads. The device doesn’t display other common things you might want to avoid, such as ferry landings, U-turns, or unpaved roads.

The map screen actually has more screens hidden within it. For example, if you touch the compass, top left, it will take you to a page that has a lot more information about your current location. If you touch the signal indicator, top right, you will see a screen that shows all the GPS satellites that you are currently receiving a signal from. If you touch the arrow, bottom left, it will show you a maneuver list. This list shows all the turns you need to make to get to your destination.

The arrival time is another feature of the map screen. The arrival time can be found to the right of the menu button on the bottom of the map screen. You can click it to switch between remaining time, distance, and then back to arrival time.
