Magellan Maestro 5310

Magellan Maestro 5310 Review:
The Magellan Maestro 5310 has a 5-inch screen, while the 4200s have a 4.3-inch widescreen display. The Magellan 5310 offers pre-loaded maps of the entire United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Canada and 6 million preprogrammed, searchable points of interest. Magellan 5310 offers AAA travel information and text-to-speech directions that give real street names, bluetooth for hands-free phone calls, integrated traffic.

The Magellan Maestro 5310 parallels the previous top of the line Maestro 4250 in a number of ways. The user interface is virtually identical, except for the features not included. Like the 4250, the Magellan Maestro 5310 has 6 million POIs, three months of traffic service, text to speech, the AAA TourBook, and AAA roadside assistance. Navteq-based maps for the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico are included in the on-board internal 2GB of memory, just as in the 4250. Interestingly, Magellan switched GPS receivers from the SiRFstarIII found in the 4250 to a Centrality Atlas III processor. This is the first product I’ve seen based on this chip. The Magellan 5310 features a dual-core ARM 9 processor, supports USB 2.0, and has a 30-channel receiver.

The Magellan Maestro 5310 had some standout features. Voice directions were loud and clear, even with our car radio turned up and the windows rolled down. The Magellan 5310 also offers text-to-speech directions that read out every street and exit name. While you can find this function on many current GPS devices, the Magellan 5310 was very clear and easier to understand than other machines. The Magellan 5310 includes an integrated traffic receiver for real-time traffic-incident and slow-down reports. The alerts worked well at advising us of potential problems along our planned routes. When we hit areas of congestion, the GPS would display its SmartDetour icon on the map, which enabled us to calculate a new route around the problem. Another helpful routing feature is the Exit POI function that allows you to find upcoming fuel, food, lodging, and more along a highway route.

The interface is clear and uncluttered, with large and easy-to-understand icons. The touch screen is very responsive, and the large LCD makes data input a delight. Starting a trip is as simple as entering an address or choosing a POI. (The Magellan 5310 also offers multi-destination routing, so you can plan an entire trip with multiple stops.) Once you select an address, several routing methods are available, such as shortest time and shortest distance. Unfortunately, the Magellan 5310 lacks vehicle profiles found on other devices, so you can’t indicate whether you are driving a car, bike, or truck. Accordingly, the only avoidance option is to bypass toll roads; if you are driving a commercial vehicle or RV and need to steer clear of limited-access roads, you’re out of luck. Another minus: While the Magellan 5310 shares the same interface as Magellan’s Maestro 4000 series, it lacks features such as Bluetooth and voice command, which are found even in less expensive 4000-series models.
