Magellan Maestro 3210

Magellan Maestro 3210 Review:
The Magellan Maestro 3210 is auto navigation with AAA TourBook included in a pocket sized design. Built-in to the Maestro is the AAA TourBook guide information. This information will provide AAA roadside assistance details as well AAA Show Your Card and Save discount locations*. Inside the slim, .7″ case of the Maestro 3210 is an ultra sensitive, WAAS GPS receiver for superb GPS reception, there is also a connection for an optional external antenna. The 3.5” QVGA touch screen display allows for easy operation and viewing in any lighting condition. The built-in Li-ion battery will keep the Magellan 3210 powered for approximately two hours, when you are away from a power supply.

The Maestro 3210’s menu easily guided me to TourBook ratings of restaurants in my area, and I found accurate, 2-paragraph reviews and hours of operation for them. After you find what you want, just press “route” and you are on your way. The TourBook includes accommodations, restaurants, attractions, and events. Most models in the Magellan Maestro line have the TourBook.

Beyond the TourBook, the Maestro 3210 has some strong features, including an accurate, SiRFstarIII GPS receiver and high-sensitivity antenna (it acquired and held signals well), “quick spell,” which helps you finish data input quickly, and an auto-dimmer for night driving.

Easy To Use Interface
The intuitive user interface makes the Maestro series incredibly easy to use. Use the big icons on the 3.5-inch touch screen to search for your destination by address, intersection, or any of 1.3 million points of interest (POIs), including restaurants, hotels, airports, gas stations, and more. You can even touch an onscreen icon for a nearby destination, see name and address, and get an instant route. Turn by turn visual and spoken directions guide you every step of the way.

Auto re-route gets you quickly back on track whenever you make a detour or miss a turn. QuickSpell feature intelligently searches and checks spelling when you enter addresses. The Magellan 3210 offers multiple view options, including 2D, 3D, and TrueView that shows your upcoming turn using a 3D split screen. Maneuver List displays the full turn-by-turn details of your route. Auto night view adjusts color and contrast for easy night viewing.

Take It Anywhere
The Magellan 3210 is super-thin, lightweight and fits easily into any pocket. The integrated rechargeable battery enables you to operate the Maestro 3210 away from your vehicle for up to three hours. The battery recharges while driving via the included vehicle power adapter.

Tons of Data
The Magellan Maestro 3210 comes pre-loaded with Navteq maps of the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and 1.3 million points of interest (POIs). POI data includes telephone numbers and addresses.

It also has an Address Book in which you can create and store POIs and addresses that you use frequently.

Flexible Routing
The Magellan 3210 provides a particularly large number of routing features relevant to its price point.

  • Multi-destination routing: Select up to 20 destinations and choose the order that best fits your needs.
  • SmartDetour: Prompts you to route around heavy or stopped freeway traffic.
  • Customizable route methods: Choose between Fastest Time, Shortest Distance, Least or Most Use of Freeways, and Avoid Toll Roads
  • Route exclusion: Select streets and freeways to avoid so you can get there your way

The Magellan 3210 picks up satellites much faster than the Garmin Nuvi does, even if you unplug it and transport it across the country. There’s never any waiting to acquire satellites. This is especially important when you’re driving in an unfamiliar area or need a quick recalculation. It has a largely useless but cool feature of showing how many satellites are tracking you and the strength of the signal. However, the map navigation software, the heart and soul of a GPS unit, is quirkier than the Garmin’s, with an occasional outrageous route plotted. For example, it plotted a 90 minute route for a trip that I can make in 65 minutes, even though I had selected the fastest route on the touch screen; every time I disregarded the GPS directions, it would subtract another few minutes - odd, since it supposedly chose the fastest route to begin with. Most of the time, however, it selects the logical route, allowing users to program it for the fastest, shortest, most- and least-use of highways. Although I did have one problem with the GPS not getting me to my point-of-interest, I haven’t had an issue since. The lack of trust that one miss creates is phenomenal. You shouldn’t have to question your GPS. Still, it always gets me home. (Both brands may get the side of the street incorrect; for example, both list my address as being on the opposite side of the street.)

The Magellan Maestro 3210 uses different chimes to indicate the exact moment to turn, and it gives enough warning of approaching actions. The points of interest are adequate for most uses, although typing in, say, a school (for those traveling to see high school sports!) works better than trying to figure out which category it might belong to. I really like the feature that shows small gas station and restaurant icons on the map. The keyboard for entering addresses is easy to view and use. Recalculation is quick, and it doesn’t hang or keep recalculating absurd ways to get back to the original route as our Nuvi can since it recognizes much faster when I want to pick an alternate route. The 3-D view is accurate and visible, even with the smaller 3.5 inch screen. The battery life lasts about 90 minutes, not enough to make it practical to double as a hand-held or to use without the car charger.

The Magellan 3210 comes with an auto charger, a cable to connect to your PC (Windows only, not Mac), and a suction disc/long-neck cradle to attach, more or less permanently, to your dashboard. Its size makes it easy to tuck out of sight.
